Thus it can be converted to\u00a0alkyl halides; for example red\u00a0phosphorus\u00a0and\u00a0iodine\u00a0produce\u00a0n-propyl iodide\u00a0in 80% yield, while\u00a0PCl<sub>3<\/sub>\u00a0with catalytic\u00a0ZnCl<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0gives\u00a0n-propyl chloride. Reaction with\u00a0acetic acid\u00a0in the presence of an\u00a0H<sub>2<\/sub>SO<sub>4<\/sub>\u00a0catalyst under\u00a0Fischer esterification\u00a0conditions gives propyl acetate, while refluxing propanol overnight with formic acid alone can produce propyl formate in 65% yield. Oxidation of 1-propanol with\u00a0Na<sub>2<\/sub>Cr<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>7<\/sub>\u00a0and H<sub>2<\/sub>SO<sub>4<\/sub>\u00a0gives only a 36% yield of\u00a0propionaldehyde, and therefore for this type of reaction higher yielding methods using\u00a0PCC\u00a0or the\u00a0Swern oxidation\u00a0are recommended.
