It has a similar\u00a0polarity\u00a0to\u00a0ethyl acetate, but greater stability towards\u00a0aqueous\u00a0acid\u00a0and\u00a0base. It can be used to extract gold, silver and other precious metals from\u00a0cyanide\u00a0solutions, such as those found at gold mines, to determine the levels of those dissolved metals.\u00a0Diisobutyl ketone\u00a0(DIBK), a related lipophilic ketone, is also used for this purpose. Methyl isobutyl ketone is also used as a denaturing agent for\u00a0denatured alcohol. When mixed with water or isopropyl alcohol MIBK serves as a\u00a0developer\u00a0for\u00a0PMMA\u00a0electron beam lithography\u00a0resist.
