Pure diethanolamine is a white solid at\u00a0room temperature, but its tendency to\u00a0absorb water\u00a0and to\u00a0supercool\u00a0mean it is often encountered as a colorless, viscous liquid. Diethanolamine is polyfunctional, being a secondary\u00a0amine\u00a0and a\u00a0diol. Like other organic amines, diethanolamine acts as a\u00a0weak base. Reflecting the hydrophilic character of the secondary amine and hydroxyl groups, DEA is soluble in water. Amides prepared from DEA are often also hydrophilic. It is used to remove\u00a0hydrogen sulfide\u00a0and\u00a0carbon dioxide\u00a0from natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>In oil refineries, a DEA in water solution is commonly used to remove\u00a0hydrogen sulfide\u00a0from\u00a0sour gas. It has an advantage over a similar amine\u00a0ethanolamine\u00a0in that a higher concentration may be used for the same corrosion potential.
