It is a common ingredient in formulations used for both industrial and consumer products. The triethanolamine neutralizes\u00a0fatty acids, adjusts and\u00a0buffers\u00a0the\u00a0pH, and solubilizes\u00a0oils\u00a0and other ingredients that are not completely\u00a0soluble\u00a0in water. Triethanolammonium salts in some cases are more soluble than salts of\u00a0alkali metals\u00a0that might be used otherwise, and results in less alkaline products than would from using alkali metal hydroxides to form the salt. Some common products in which triethanolamine is found are\u00a0sunscreen lotions, liquid\u00a0laundry detergents,\u00a0dishwashing liquids, general cleaners,\u00a0hand sanitizers,\u00a0polishes,\u00a0metalworking\u00a0fluids,\u00a0paints,\u00a0shaving cream\u00a0and\u00a0printing inks.[6]<\/p>\n<p>Cement production<\/p>\n<p>Triethanolamine is also used as organic additive (0.1\u00a0wt%) in the grinding of\u00a0cement clinker. It facilitates the grinding process by preventing agglomeration and coating of the powder at the surface of balls and mill wall.[7]<\/p>\n<p>Cosmetics and medicine<\/p>\n<p>Various\u00a0ear diseases and infections\u00a0are treated with eardrops containing triethanolamine polypeptide oleate-condensate, such as Cerumenex in the United States. In pharmaceutics, triethanolamine is the active ingredient of some eardrops used to treat impacted\u00a0earwax. It also serves as a\u00a0pH\u00a0balancer in many different cosmetic products, ranging from cleansing creams and milks,\u00a0skin lotions, eye gels,\u00a0moisturizers,\u00a0shampoos,\u00a0shaving foams, and so on. TEOA is a fairly strong base: a 1% solution has a pH of approximately 10, whereas the pH of skin is less than pH\u00a07, approximately 5.5\u22126.0. A triol is a molecule with three alcohol groups. Triethanolamine is a strong base. Approximately 150,000 tonnes were produced in 1999.
